Direct quotation marks are used to indicate exact words taken from a source. Here, the phrase "significant results" is put in quotes to show those exact words appear in the study, while the sentence continues with that support the hypothesis. The overall sentence ends with a period after the final word, not inside the quotation marks, because the quoted material is a fragment used within a larger sentence and the main punctuation falls at the end of the entire sentence. The comma placement in the other option creates an unnecessary pause before a clause that is essential to identify the results, and omitting quotation marks removes the direct quotation entirely. This setup makes the intent clear: the study found words that are being quoted, and those words function as part of a larger statement about the results.
